MARY JO MADDA

Mary Jo Madda recently graduated from the Technology, Innovation, and Education master's program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Following her time at Northwestern University, Mary Jo moved into the world of education as a KIPP science teacher and grade level chair with Teach for America in Houston, TX, and later as a curriculum developer for a Catholic school in Los Angeles. During these years, Mary Jo discovered a passion for curriculum, educational technology, and closing the STEM achievement gap, particularly when she served as part of a panel for the L.A. Archdiocese to develop district-wide Common Core curriculum guides.

Mary Jo has lead and taken part in several educational technology initiatives around Harvard and MIT. She worked with Professor Karen Brennan and the MIT Media Lab’s ScratchEd program to create on-line professional development for teachers to learn basic computer programming, known as the "Creative Computing On-line Workshop." Mary Jo also worked with a team of scientists and curriculum developers to create a media asset library to foster immersive science inquiry for Harvard’s mobile augmented reality STEM project, EcoMOBILE.

Mary Jo also served as an Education Entrepreneurship Fellow at the Harvard innovation lab, as well as a 2012-2013 resident at the i-lab. She co-founded a start-up seeking to create engaging

on-line media for STEM classroom instruction, and in turn

experienced a number of successes, including a feature in the Boston Herald, and a position in the finals for Teach for America’s Social Innovation Award.

Mary Jo’s passion for entrepreneurship and educational technology influences her desire to develop her leadership skills and further the use of technology as an effective aid for both public and private school environments. She will continue to help foster educational technology implementation when she moves into a role at edSurge (www.edsurge.com) this coming fall.
